Shirley MacLean Beaty was born on April 24th, 1934 in Richmond, Virginia. She was named after the famous child actress, Shirley Temple. Her father, Ira, had various professions including psychology professor, school administrator, and real estate agent. Her mother, Kathryn, was a drama teacher who sacrificed her own show business aspirations to raise her family. In 1937, Shirley welcomed her little brother, Warren, into the world, who also became a prominent talent in Hollywood. Due to weak ankles, Kathryn enrolled Shirley in ballet classes at a young age, sparking her passion for performance. Despite spraining her ankle before a performance in Cinderella at the age of four, Shirley showed remarkable determination by continuing to perform without complaint. Throughout her childhood, she often played male roles in dance recitals due to her height and the lack of male dancers in her classes. This inclination towards masculine roles continued into middle school, where she excelled in baseball and held the record for most home runs in a season.
