Australia’s adopted popstar son Leo Sayer reflects on his career

A music heart-throb of the 1970s and 80s, Leo Sayer has found a new audience by spreading hope through the wards of a Canberra hospital.
For several years, the pop legend has quietly boosted patients’ morale at the Canberra Region Cancer Centre, putting on private concerts well away from the public gaze.
As Sayer makes his hospital rounds, he serenades and chats with chemotherapy patients, medical staff, and volunteers.


Sayer says he finds it inspiring to sing to the people he meets on the ward.
“If I can come and bring a little bit of joy, a bit of happiness onto the wards every now and then every time I visit, it’s a fantastic thing.”
Sayer donates his time as an ambassador for the Canberra Hospital Foundation, which fundraises for patient support and facilities over and above that provided by the government.
