Taxi was one of the most popular and critically acclaimed sitcoms of the 1970s, and it has one of the greatest ensemble casts of all time, including screen legends like Danny Devito, Tony Danza, Carol Kane and Christopher Lloyd.
Recently, several of Taxi‘s stars gathered for a reunion 40 years after the show aired its final episode — see them today!
Taxi ran for five seasons on ABC between 1978 and 1982. A critical and commercial success, the sitcom is one of the most acclaimed sitcoms of all time and won 18 Emmy Awards, including three for Best Comedy Series.
Yesterday, four of the sitcom’s main cast members got together 40 years later. Photos show stars Tony Danza, Christopher Lloyd, Judd Hirsch and Carol Kane enjoying some drinks together.
Danza and Lloyd both shared the photo on social media. “Love these people so much!” Tony Danza wrote on Twitter.
“What the hell is going on here? #taxi” Lloyd wrote on Instagram.
After posting the reunion pic, Tony Danza also tweeted another photo of a more complete cast reunion, when the cast of Taxi attended the premiere of the Broadway show Honeymoon in Vegas in 2015, which Danza starred in.
It’s heartwarming to see these old castmates back together again — and a reminder of how many legendary careers were launched by Taxi.
Christopher Lloyd, now 84, won two Emmys for playing the iconic role of The Reverend Jim “Iggy” Ignatowski.
Today he is best known for playing Doc Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy, as well as films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Clue and The Addams Family.
Carol Kane, who played Simka Gravas and won two Emmy Awards, was recently a main cast member on Netflix’s The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Her films include Annie Hall, Scrooged, The Princess Bride and Hester Street, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. She is now 70.
Tony Danza, 72, played the kind but slow-witted Tony Banta on Taxi. After the classic sitcom ended he remained a TV favorite with the long-running Who’s the Boss?
Judd Hirsch, who played Alex Rieger on Taxi, is now 88 but still going strong: last year he he was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans. His other films include Ordinary People, Independence Day and A Beautiful Mind. He won two Emmys for Taxi.
Cast members not present at the reunion include Danny DeVito, who played dispatcher Louie De Palma. DeVito, 78, has been a major movie star for decades and currently stars on the long-running It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
DeVito’s wife Rhea Perlman also had a recurring role on Taxi. The couple are now separated.
Also absent from the reunion was Marilu Henner, who starred as Elaine on Taxi and has since co-starred in many films and TV shows.
Sadly, two of Taxi‘s principal cast members have passed away: pioneering comedian Andy Kaufman, who played Latka Gravas on the sitcom, died in 1984.
Jeff Conaway, who played struggling actor Bobby Wheeler in the show’s first four seasons and is also known for playing Kenickie in Grease, died of pneumonia with sepsis in 2011 at the age of 60. Conaway had struggled with drug addiction for many years.
Forty years after it ended, Taxi remains a TV classic and is still popular in syndication. All the seasons are also streaming on Paramount Plus.
Taxi is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, and it’s great to see so many of the show’s stars reunite all these years later!
