James Woods was born on April 18, 1947, in Vernal, Utah to Gail Peyton Woods and Martha A. Woods. His father, an army intelligence officer, tragically passed away in 1960 after routine surgery. Following her husband’s death, Martha operated a pre-school and later remarried. Woods grew up in Warwick, Rhode Island, where he attended Pilgrim High School. Raised in a Catholic household, he briefly served as an altar boy, and his Irish heritage influenced his upbringing.
Woods pursued his undergraduate studies at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), majoring in political science. During his time at MIT, he joined the Theta Delta Chi fraternity and actively participated in Dramashop, the student theatre group. Woods showcased his acting prowess by both performing in and directing numerous plays.
